Certain news that brightened up my week.

October 19, 2009

A number of news really raised my spirits the last week.

First off, the release of Book 12 of the Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light The Gathering Storm, is set on the 27th of October!

As Wheel of Time and any fantasy novel fans would know, the author for one of the greatest and most epic fantasy series ever, Robert Jordon, passed away much too soon in 2007, leaving his life’s work unfinished. Later that year, Robert Jorden’s widow, Harriet McDougal, decided to pass the helm of penning the rest of the books to fellow fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. That was two years ago.

Since that time, we Wheel of Time fans have been eagerly waiting for what was presumed to be the conclusion to the Wheel of Time. Why presumed, you say? Because RJ has once been quoted saying that he will finish the series by Book 12, even if he had to make it into a Bible. But alas, that is not to be. To finish up the series in Book 12 would require said book to be like, 2500 pages long. TOR would have to come up with a new way of printing books if that was the case. Also, it probably won’t do justice to the characters.

But that does not change the fact that we have been waiting. And now that time has finally drawn upon us – in a little more than eight days, The Gathering Storm will be set to be released all over the world! And I can’t wait!

Of course, TOR knows about the mass market value that the Wheel of Time holds. The Gathering Storm is arguably the most highly anticipated book this year, perhaps even more so than Harry Potter (which really isn’t all its hyped up to be, anyway. Only reason why its so popular is because all the kids who rave over it like it’s the best book ever hasn’t read other books. Same thing with the Twilight series). You know that no matter what you do, the book is going to sell. Critics might pan it, critics might praise it, but its going to sell. If I can compare it to anything anime, it would be Suzumiya Haruhi. Even with Endless Eight, the DVDs are still selling. Goes to show just how crazy some of the otaku over in Japan can be. But I digress. Coming back on topic….*ahem*

TOR knows about the great market value that The Gathering Storm holds, and it isn’t pulling any stops in promoting the book. Even through the thing is going to sell, it won’t hurt to pump up publicity over it. Which is why they have since released the prologue for sale as an eBook, and the first and second chapters can be found over at their site if you are already a member.

First Chapter: Tears from Steel. Text and audio.

Second Chapter: The Nature of Pain. Audio only

Egwene totally owns.

Also, the video below might bring a laugh if you are familiar with the Wheel of Time. Just how did the Dark One taint sadin?

And that’s the first piece of news. Actually, by itself, it would have been enough to keep a silly grin on my face the entire week…Or at least till I get my hands on The Gathering Storm. Now all I need is for George R.R Martin to release A Dance with Dragons and my life will be complete.

The second piece of news, while not being as epic as the releasing of The Gathering Storm, nevertheless manages to catch my attention. And that is – my local TV station is broadcasting The Legend of The Seeker, which is the TV series that is based on Terry Goodkind’s fantasy series, The Sword of Truth.

Now, I’ve read the Sword of Truth series all the way till Faith of the Fallen, whereupon I got bored and gave up the series altogether. But I totally loved Wizards’ First Rule. To me, that’s the best book in the whole series. Somehow, I felt that Goodkind lost track of what he was doing somewhere along the way and was just using the novels as a tool to tell the world what he thinks.

I didn’t like it.

Which is why I stopped reading. But for his earlier books, he still had that vision, that refreshing-ness that made the story a joy to read. And Wizard’s First Rule embodied that refreshing-ness.  Which is why when I heard that they would be airing the first season of Legend of the Seeker, I was overjoyed. I never thought that my local TV station (which, by the way, is a monopoly. No competition there. So much for a free market) would bring in such a series. Good news, that. Good
news.

And the 3rd news? My Nendoroid Saber Lily has arrived. Ahaha. Pictures when I can get a camera.
